Week 4 Project Planning

I’ve chosen to do the “Think about a theme you see running through your life (failure is the best lesson, love is eternal, etc). Choose a reading that you think also discusses this theme (even if it reaches different conclusions about it). Explore connections between how the theme plays out in your life, and how the theme gets played out in the reading” prompt. I will be using the text “Self reliance by Whitfield”   and the literary devices that I will be using its “theme” and “tone” because I feel as if these two devices play a big role in this particular text. First I will identify the theme of the text in which it is not hard to discover. Second I will break apart the text so that I can put each line into a specific group. Based on how they were written that's how I will separate them. Then I will identify the tone in each of the broken up groups. Reading this text you can definitely tell that the  author's tone change from the beginning all the way to the end. And wh...

"Feedback Strategies"

While reading the article “How to craft constructive feedback” there was some really good points that were made in the article. For example it said be a guide in which I think that this is the main one because most people don't have guides. Usually people will tell them “Oh your doing great” or “Yeah keep up the good work”   without being straightforward with them and not telling them that they need to fix some things. I feel as if the best criticism or feedback is when the person is not giving you all praise because there is always something that needs to be fixed. And just by that little bit of feedback can make somebody change their mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. It also stated in the article to observe,  describe, and suggest. I also think that suggestion is it good way to get feedback because maybe going about a situation in a different direction may help. Personally it's 50/50 for me to give somebody feedback or criticism because sometimes I do...

Topic Research Week 3: I have identified the topic I will write about

I have chosen the topic “Think about a theme you see running through your life (failure is the best lesson, love is eternal, etc). Choose a reading that you think also discusses this theme (even if it reaches different conclusions about it). Explore connections between how the theme plays out in your life, and how the theme gets played out in the reading”. I’ve decided to choose the reading of “Self reliance by Whitfield” because I did a similar writing assignment in high school with Emerson's view on self reliance but I never put my life into it so I think this will be a fun writing assignment. Also by writing this I feel as if I may be able to discover something about myself and this text that I hadn’t seen or known before. I think first I will dissect the text and find somethings that I can relate to and some things I can oppose to. I will try my best to put myself in the authors shoes to understand why they might have put a certain phrase or subject into the text.

Week 3 Analysis: Close Reading of "Self Reliance"

In James Monroe Whitfield “Self-reliance” I feel as if he is trying to help us understand why and how relying on oneself can be the best thing for us. He uses a way with his words to not give away the answer but also give an obvious explanation to his reasonings behind self-reliance.  In the start Woodfield says “ I love the man whose lofty mind on God and its own strength allies; who seeks the welfare of his kind... who cares not for the world's Applause, but, to his own fixed purpose true, the patch which God and nature's laws, point out, doth earnestly pursue”. If we take a step back here we can see the the author obviously applauds a man or woman who doesn't care what other people think only what he thinks of himself and what God thinks of him. Looking how the author put “ The patch which God and nature's laws point out doth earnestly pursue” It feels as if the author phrased it this way  to help us understand that basically our lives are patches and we have to be ...

Reading notes Week 2:"The Land of Little Rain",Part A

As I visualize the setting in my mind I can see that the details the storyteller is giving me of the setting is describing a hot desert. You can tell she’s very descriptive when she starts to describe how hot it is and she also mentioned that it's a place where no one lives. Mary says“Desert is the name it wears upon the maps..Desert is a loose term to indicate land that supports no man; whether the land can be bitted and broken to that purpose is not proven. Void of life it never is, however dry the air and villainous the soil. This is the nature of that country. There are hills, rounded, blunt, burned...The hill surface is streaked with ash drift and black, unweathered lava flow”(Mary Austin). The story gives off a feeling type vibe where you should imagine and feel how the story is being betrayed. When I started imagining things of my own to add on with what the Storyteller said it makes me think of this movie that I watch a long time ago called The Scorpion King when his army wa...

Feedback thoughts

Over the years since I can remember people have always been giving me feedback with things since kindergarten all the way up to now. Some of that feedback and comments were positive things in which people wanted me to improve on a certain subject or sport. I feel as if feedback is good it's like positive criticism. So just say for example if you are learning a language and you are excelling and reading and writing but you're lacking in speaking. A good person would tell you to not stop reading and writing but to pay more attention to the speaking part otherwise you won't learn how to speak in that particular language then it'll be like you're a step behind. There's also been negative feedback given to me before and I really didn't get mad over it but it also didn't make me feel that good. I think people need negative feedback if they are not doing something correctly when they know they should be doing it a different way. Or when some people know they co...

Topic Brainstorm

For my first topic that I have chosen to “Compare and contrast elements of two different texts. For example, explore the similarities and differences between two characters in the texts, or examine how one theme is handled in similar and dissimilar ways in two different texts". I have chosen this topic because I love to compare and contrast things and when you take two different stories and compare the elements to each other there's always a similarity no matter how small it is and I love finding those. I have a load of previous knowledge when it comes to comparing and contrasting different  text because in high school every time we read a new book we always compared and contrasted it to the previous books that we read. What I would like to learn from his assignment is how to improve my way of finding evidence and putting up a bigger argument. A majority of the time I would just do the simple things so that I don't have to stress about issues depending upon what text I...

Week 2 Analysis "Coyote Cooks His Daughter"

Tone : The tone of “Coyote Cooks His Daughter” happened to have a kid-like playful tone in the beginning but then a dark scary tone in the end. What I mean by this is in the beginning of the story there's a coyote and his daughter and the coyote is hungry so he goes out hunting and he takes his daughter with him. So you kind of get this feel of a father daughter relationship. This is what I mean by the playful loving kind of tone. If you also look in each stanza there's a repeated word that puts emphasis on what is happening. For example it says “his tail when switch-switch-switch gallop-gallop-gallop he went he kept coming along running and his daughter kept coming slowly behind him”(52). So here you can hear and see the playful tone that's being given out between the father and the daughter. It kind of makes you think that his daughter is learning from him in things that he does. However towards the ending of the story after he knocks his daughter out and cooks her, her ...

Reading notes Week 2: Coyote cooks his daughter, Part B

In the story “Coyote Cooks his daughter” it has this way of foreshadow along with repetition. If you take a look at the title it kind of already gives you a dark feeling because the title is “Coyote Cooks his daughter”. To be honest from the beginning I thought that the title was a metaphor for something but it actually is very straightforward and tells you exactly what's going to happen in the story and what the story is about. The story seems to have a lot of repetition because in each stanza there's like a repeated word. I think the author did this to put emphasis on what was happening to make even the littlest of lines have the biggest meanings. Also I think the repetition was used by the author to keep the reader engaged it seems. As for the foreshadowing there seems to be a lot of it because every time the coyote would go to do something it would have the repetition lines and then a conclusion at the end of the stanza. Also because of the title it kind of keeps you wonde...

Reading notes Week 2:The Creation,Part A

The story The Creation by Maidu  the theme seems to revolve around “creation”in which the author is describing how the world became to be. In addition to that how creatures, humans,  and other living organisms became to be. If you think about it the characters names of the story do you make the difference on how you can look at it. For example “Earth maker”  the author had named this character to be specific on who actually made the Earth. He wanted land so badly that he started to create in which land people and other things became to be. So he was named Earth maker. On the other hand there is another character named coyote in which this is the earth makers partner when creating the world. He seems quite nice given the circumstances of his name because coyotes are dangerous animals and people try to avoid them as much as possible. So his name is a bit questionable. As for the setting it's obviously the Earth before it was created because we author wanted to show the begi...

Time Strategies

When it comes to time management strategies I always think ahead. Like some people will wait till the last minute and cram everything in just to make the deadline. Me on the other hand I will cram everything in when I first get the assigned so that I'm home free until the next assignment needs to be turned in or is assigned. So for example if an assignment is due on Friday I'm going to do all the work on Monday and Tuesday so that the rest of the week I don't have to stress about getting my work done on time. My schedule is pretty tight this semester because I'm taking four classes which are 12 units and I do have work on the sidelines. I do like the weekly calendar because it lets you know ahead of time  when something is due. Also love how all the week's worth of homework and projects we're going to do is already laid out so it's like you can work ahead and get everything done early. As for the extra credit part I don't think I'm going to need to d...

Technology

When it comes to technology I do use it every day of my life so it's nothing new. I am a little nervous when it comes to this class because what we will be using is majority of the things I have never came across or heard of a used before. For example the website publishing I've never done it before so I have no idea what to do when it comes to that. I never wanted to make a website so it just never came to mind. As for the bookmarking I do bookmark some things that are important and things that I need to keep up with. The text-to-speech reader I have never used that and I hope that we don't use it that often or it's not that hard to use. Now for the course website the announcements I'm always aware of announcements that are given out. So I do see all the announcements from the teachers that I have. As for the class Wiki I have never used it until this semester in this class. Seems like a bit of a hassle because everything could just be put on canvas but every tea...
