Weekly Review: Im tired

Looking for this weekly review I finish all of week 11 and I am tired. I know you may be asking why am I doing this all so quickly but the answer is I have other classes to attend to and it's becoming overwhelming. Also I'm literally tired because it is 9:21 p.m. and I am up doing my homework. I told myself I am going to be done with this at 10 p.m. I know that doing all this work at once is very stressful but I also know that when I'm done doing all this work it's going to be a huge relief off my shoulders. Soon after I'll be able to attend to my other classes and try to get those classworks done as soon as possible. To be honest I had one of those thoughts again. One of those thoughts where I felt like giving up but the minute I thought about my goals he just kept me going. Hopefully I can keep this faith in me and push through. I know I can and I'm not going to give up without a fight. I love school but at the same time I hate school because it can get really...

Growth Mindset week 11:Talking About Failure Is Crucial for Growth. Here's How to Do It Right.

One thing that the article confirmed for me in which I already knew about was when it said “After weeks of careful preparation and practice, you feel ready to knock it out of the park. But the day comes and, for whatever reason, every joke seems to fall flat, you bumble through all your numbers and your technology seems to be working against you”.I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me. I prepared for so many presentations and then I always think that I'm going to do good and I have everything that I'm going to say but the minute it's time to go up there and do the presentation I either forget something, stutter, or mess something up. I don't know why this happens to the majority of people but it's crazy. The funny thing is I'm not afraid to give presentation at all. Like when I go in front of the class I'm completely comfortable it's just that I end up messing up the minute I give a presentation. Also another thing that happens is m...

Wikipedia Trail: David Henderson to New York City

So I read David Henderson “California 13” and to be honest it was really good. So when I went on wikipedia I searched David Henderson . It said that he was born in 1942 in Harlem, New York. He had went to 3 different colleges. It stated that “Henderson studied writing, communications and Eastern cultures without ever completing a degree. His first published poem appeared in the New York newsweekly Black American in 1960”(Wikipedia). This lead him to becoming a black Nationalist. After this he had move to the Lower East Side of New York. After I read about his early life I decided to look up the “ Lower East side ”. When we I had clicked on that it said The Lower East Side is also an abbreviation for LES. This is a part of the southeastern part New York City Borough. It is located by the east river, Bowery, and Canal street. And because I don't know why i decided to click onto the East River next. When i clicked on that page it had said “ The East River is a salt water tidal ...

Weekly Review: Another Week

So I finished all of week nines work and right now I feel like just laying down. But I know that I'm trying to finish all of my work early in this class and in my other classes so I'm going to be one busy bug. I would have to say in my other classes I think the work is a little bit more simpler because everything is turning on campus and there is not as many assignments any other classes. To be honest I don't really see any real connection between this class in my other classes except for the fact that one of my other classes it in English class but still in that English class there is less work. I think that week 9 really help me see things and put things in perspective on what I want to do for my future and how I want to live my life. I ain't going to lie there was a time where I really wanted to just give up within them second I thought about my goals that went straight to the back of me. This week I had went to my drama class and I'm kind of tired of it because ...

Wikipedia Trail: From "The Maltese Falcon to The Crusades

For the Wikipedia Trail I decided to do the reading by Dashiell Hammett chapter 6 from " The Maltese Falcon ” On Wikipedia it first started to say how the Maltese Falcon is a  1930 detective novel in the main character is Sam Spade a private detective in San Francisco. As you start to read more they start to tell you about the other characters like Joel Cairo a homosexual and Effie and Gutman other characters who are also in this novel. So as I was reading it said that young man was telling detective Spade about “Knights of Malta” as a gift to the king of Spain. So I clicked on Knights of Malta and it led me to “ Knights Hospitalle r” which stated “ The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem ( Latin : Ordo Fratrum Hospitalis Sancti Ioannis Hierosolymitani ; Italian : Cavalieri dell'Ordine dell'Ospedale di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme ), also known as the Order of Saint John, Order of Hospitallers, Knights Hospitaller, Knights Hospitalier or Hospitallers...

Growth Mindset W9: "Learning from other students" Challenge 3

When it comes to having a growth mindset I think that I have one but it all depends on the situation. While reading the different quotes from the students two of them stood out to me the most. The first one was “I often fall into the trap of saying good job, awesome when reviewing people's work. It used to be a game in high school to see who could critique "you put the wrong date" so that we could have our one correction out of the way. I definitely will work on being more specific with feedback, as I know how much I dislike non-specific feedback”. This quote stood out to me because I find myself doing this exact same thing in which I don't take the time to actually give someone the right feedback so they will just get service feedback. Sometimes I feel as if my feedback may be too critical or harsh in which I just barely make any comments do their work but I do know that by doing this it doesn't help the other person. The second quote that I had found very inte...

Reading Notes Week 9: "Southern Mansion" by Bontemps, Part X

In the poem “ Southern Mansion” Bontemps  talks about the serious conditions of how blacks were slaves and how there was a lot of inequality.I feel as if you wrote this poem so that people would be more engaging and aware of what black slaves went through and how they suffered so much during slavery. In the beginning of the poem it says “ Chains of bondmen dragging on the ground” This gives me the sense that the author wanted to express how  inequality play a big part. You can see the black men are the ones getting their rights taken away from them and  chained together as slaves. You also get a sense of camaraderie in this poem when he says “.A dry leaf trembles on the wall”. This part of the poem I don't really understand but if I were to take a guess it reminds me of a tree that is near a fence and as the tree gets older the leaves start to fall and I feel as if the slaves are the leaves. If you think about it trees don't hold onto brown leaves they hold onto green one...

Week 9 Project Planning: Project Action Plan

The the second project I have decided to choose “Pick a subject: love, work, freedom, etc. Then choose two selections and discuss how that subject is discussed in those selections. Use literary devices to help frame your discussion”. What this prompt is asking me to do is choose a subject in which two text discus the same theme or if I feel they have the same subject then write about it. I have decided to us “The creation” and “Coyote eats his daughter” to discuss to subject matter of trust. I feel that both show a great amount of trust between friendship and family. As for the literary devices that I will using I have chosen Symbolism and Tone. I feel as if these two have the most value in both stories and I plan using these to help state my project. First I will make my introduction paragraph with my thesis statement, second I will talk about how Tone helps set the theme of trust in these two text, Third I will talk about symbolism, next i will have a discuss paragraph on the decept...

Week 9 Progress

I think that my progress so far it hasn't been my best but I am back on track and I feel like I'm going to keep my head up and focus on my work more. I think the class assignments that I enjoy the most are the A,B assignments because it's not like we're just reading books and then writing summaries on them were actually reading stories, analyzing them and breaking them down. I haven't been  using the extra credit but I am going to start using extra credit options because I'm a little behind on my point so that is something I'm going to have to do. Some changes that I want to make in the second half of the semester is being more focused on my work and making sure that I get everything in in a timely manner. I mistakes that I want to avoid are not getting my homework turned in on time. Something new that I want to try is getting all the work done in the next week so that all I have left is commenting on others analysis and projects because obviously I can...

Week 11 Analysis: "California 13"

In this poem California 13 as I was reading it it seems to me that the author was trying to put real theme of freedom  and adventure. The author had a way with words that kind of took you along for the ride while you were reading along. It said: “Who will take your place who will take your place up there the Berkeley trees Beyond The Grand Hotel were upon the Mountain Crest California 13 above Oakland running with the silver gleam of the day and distant mountain range across the waters heading for LA” (Henderson). It seems here as if the author is taking us for a car ride. It's as if someone became free and is now traveling along the road to find where they belong in this world. In the reading there was a lot of repetition that was given and I feel as it did puts more emphasis on the text because then as the reader is reading the feel a lot more. Me personally I think that when an author puts repetition in there specifically wanting the reader to understand that main part or part...

Week 9 Analysis: "The Maltese Falcon"

This story has a theme of mystery, lies, and deceit. The author starts this chapter with theses guys named Cairo and Spade who meets up but before they could meet up Spade was being followed. This makes the the story super intriguing and mysterious right off the bat. So when they meet at their destination , Spade ends up asking Carlo who the guy thats following is. Does he know him? This brings me to suspicion because in the back of my head I think he does but who knows right. Anyways Cairo tells him that he doesn't know him. The funny thing is how the author had Cairo respond. He took his hat off then slowly put it back on and said he really doesn't know the man. This seemed a little suspect to me. As for the sex and deceit this comes to play when Spade goes to brigids hotel. Brigid is who Spades works for. Spade lets brigid know that he needs money from her to prove loyalty however she doesn't have it at the moment so she tries to use her body to make up for it. However...

Reading notes Week 9: "The love of the Last Tycoon", Part B

In F Scott Fitzgerald's it says “The love of The Last Tycoon” “There is never a time when a studio is absolutely quiet. There is always a night shift of technicians in the Laboratories and dubbing rooms and people on the maintenance staff dropping in at the commissary. But the sounds are all different the padded hush of tires, the quick  tick of a motor running idle, the naked Cry of a soprano singing into a night down microphone. Around the corner I Came Upon A man in rubber boots washing down a car in a wonderful white light a fountain among the dead industrial Shadows” (554-555). Even though this part is in the beginning I really don't understand why he started the story off this way. Don't get me wrong I think this is a really good story and I love F Scott Fitzgerald work. It may just be me but for some reason the start of the story is really confusing. I do understand how he talked about The Sopranos singing because he does make a connection when he talks about how ...

Project 1

Alesha Daniels English 205 Project 1 3/3/2018 Project 1 In my life I seem to have this recurring theme self-reliance and the older I get the more I stop needing anyone's help with everything. I have chosen the reading of “Self-reliance” by James Monroe Whitfield because I feel as if he is trying to help us understand how relying on oneself can be the greatest thing for us. This reading has some connection in which my life can relate to. Monroe has a way with his words in which he does not completely tell us a direct answer but a obvious hidden explanation to his logical reasonings on self-reliance. Growing up I always depended on people and always cared about what people thought about me. However as I started getting older I realized that other people are not going to just give me the justification and success I need to achieve on my own. For example as a kid I always knew that I wanted to move to another country and live there. So as I started getting older and the id...
