Week 9 Analysis: "The Maltese Falcon"
This story has a theme of mystery, lies, and deceit. The author starts this chapter with theses guys named Cairo and Spade who meets up but before they could meet up Spade was being followed. This makes the the story super intriguing and mysterious right off the bat. So when they meet at their destination , Spade ends up asking Carlo who the guy thats following is. Does he know him? This brings me to suspicion because in the back of my head I think he does but who knows right. Anyways Cairo tells him that he doesn't know him. The funny thing is how the author had Cairo respond. He took his hat off then slowly put it back on and said he really doesn't know the man. This seemed a little suspect to me. As for the sex and deceit this comes to play when Spade goes to brigids hotel. Brigid is who Spades works for. Spade lets brigid know that he needs money from her to prove loyalty however she doesn't have it at the moment so she tries to use her body to make up for it. However Spade doesn't take it the right way and he ends up turning her down because he wants money not sex. I also think that it is pretty interesting how the girl doesn't want to give up the information but she's willing to have sex with him so that he will not worry about it anymore. I really like how the author made his character because he doesn't give in easily. He also wants more information but she can't give it to him at the moment. This makes the story more mysterious and deceitful because what is she hiding. Overall Spade ends up wanting more information and stuck between two girls that he doesn't even trust Iva and Brigid. This definitely is a plot turner.

Hello Alesha!
ReplyDeleteYou had a very interesting take-away from the excerpt of "The Maltese Falcon". I always find it so interesting the different key points different people focus on. For me, I noted the offer of sex, but I thought it was for Spade to work solely for Brigid and not for Carlo, but it didn't stick with me as a theme for the passage. Although, you do now have me thinking there is a theme of sex because Spade's girlfriend, Iva, was quite suspicious of her man being with another woman... If I were a reader, this would be the type of story I could get into.
Hi Alesha. I could not get into this story at all. I was confused on what was going on and I was very bored reading this story. It seems like you enjoyed it. It is crazy that Brigid is offering sex to Spade as a distraction of him wanting information from her. I also am amazed that Spade turned her down because a lot of times we would read the opposite. I think you did a good job at analyzing this story. Thanks for sharing.
