Week 12 Analysis:"The Joy Luck Club"

In the story The Joy Luck Club I thought that Lindo’s Red Candle showed great symbolism. I say this because when Lindo Jong gets married her and her husband light a red candle and supposably the name of the Bride is on one end and the name of the husband is on the other. It is said that if the candle stays lit the entire night  without going out then their marriage will be successful but if the candle goes out then their marriage will be unsuccessful and not happy. But Lindo does not want to being married to him but she's also in a bind because she doesn't want to break the promise she made with her own parents. I thought that she was Brave because she ended up blowing out the candle herself however there was a servant who ended up lighting the candle again. Overall I think that this candle symbolizes two things. First  symbolizes the culture of the Chinese marriage because it's a way to decide whether it will be successful or unsuccessful union. But I also think that it symbolizes her and her strength. When she blows out the candle that is her deciding her own future and you can see here that she makes the decisions for life and I think that takes a lot of courage. I thought this was very interesting because I don't think that us westerners have a tradition like this. I think this is an interesting topic that I'm going to have to do more research on.

  1. Wow! Thank you for choosing this topic as your analysis! I found it so interesting! I just might order a candle myself and test mine and my husband's future! :) I know that was not the point of your analysis though! I like how you have found the symbolization of both her blowing out the candel herself as well and how even though she stepped up to create he own future, a servant took that away by re-lighting the candle again... now I wonder, did the servant know that she had blown it out? Or did the servant mean well and re-lit the candle in hopes for a happy marriage? I wonder how often someone re-lights these candles in re-life scenarios??

    Thank you for sharing!

  2. Hi Alesha. I am glad I came across your analysis because it is on The Joy Luck Club. I had forgotten about this whole candle superstition. I find it amazing that if the candles go out you will not have a happy marriage but if they don't go out you will. If only this was for certain then a lot of people can avoid getting married to someone, they will end up unhappy with.
