Reading Notes Week 12: "The Joy Luck Club" Part A



The books that have chosen to read is “ the Joy Luck Club”. I've chosen  to read this story because I've heard a lot about it but I've never taken the time to actually read it so I thought this might be a good time to do it. In the beginning of the story it starts off with “ Jing-Mei Woo,  The Joy Luck Club”. Jing-mei starts off by telling us that her mother Suyuan had died two months ago. But the way this was said is what really caught my attention. She said “My father thinks she was killed by her own thoughts.She had a new idea inside her head... but before I could come out of her mouth, the thought grew too big and burst.It must have been a very bad idea.The doctor said she died of a cerebral aneurysm.And her friends at the Joy Luck Club said she died just like a rabbit: quickly and with unfinished business left behind”(19). This part caught my attention because I think it's funny how the father and the friends of the Joy Luck Club talked about her death in different ways. The father said she died by her dogs The Joy Luck Club said she died quickly like a rabbit. I also thought it was funny that the author said “it must have been a very bad idea”. I think starting off the book with a little bit of humor does lighting it up a bit if that is what the author was going by. Another thing that also caught my attention was that the father asked  jing-mei to be the fourth corner of the Joy Luck Club. Just reading this part made me think of ‘completion’ like fire, water, earth, air, and north, east, south, west.

In the stories “ The Creation” and “ Coyote Cooks his Daughter”  there is a big theme of trust that is portrayed in both stories. I feel that both show a great amount of trust between friendship and family. “The Creation” is about a couple of friends Earthmaker, Coyote, and Meadowlark who go on a journey creating Earth. On this journey they all help each other and trust each other's decisions when it comes to making the planet. Now in “ Coyote Eats his Daughter” it's  about how a daughter is eaten by her own father. Trust is the most important thing between any relationship if you can't trust someone then you don't have any stability of Truth to rely on in which both of these stories uses a great amount of theme and tone to discuss the ways of how trust can be looked upon. Time Strategies

When it comes to time management strategies I always think ahead. Like some people will wait till the last minute and cram everything in just to make the deadline. Me on the other hand I will cram everything in when I first get the assigned so that I'm home free until the next assignment needs to be turned in or is assigned. So for example if an assignment is due on Friday I'm going to do all the work on Monday and Tuesday so that the rest of the week I don't have to stress about getting my work done on time. My schedule is pretty tight this semester because I'm taking four classes which are 12 units and I do have work on the sidelines. I do like the weekly calendar because it lets you know ahead of time  when something is due. Also love how all the week's worth of homework and projects we're going to do is already laid out so it's like you can work ahead and get everything done early.
