Reading Notes Week 10: "Toshio Mori", Part A

This week I read Toshio Mori stories “ The woman who makes swell Doughnuts”, “The eggs of the world” and “He who has the laughing face”. Between each of these stories there was a message that I felt was being portrayed in each one. However I think that “ The woman who makes swell Doughnuts” and “The eggs of the world”  really made an impression on me. Starting with “ The woman who makes swell Doughnuts” it says “ There is nothing I can do to describe her doughnuts; it is in a class by itself, without words, without demonstration. It is a doughnut, just a plain doughnut just out of oil but is different, unique. Perhaps when I am eating her doughnuts I am really eating her”(584). In this particular quote I felt as if the author had a real connection with this woman and the woman had a connection with her doughnuts. What I mean by this is when people make food you can tell their feelings. For example if someone is angry and frustrated and don't feel like cooking their food  will tell it all because it won't taste as good as it usually does. Or when someone is happy and joyful and cooking food they're going to do their best to make it taste as great as possible and you will be able to taste that. So what I mean is she has a connection with her doughnuts in which it makes her doughnuts taste super good and by having this connection he feels the connection with her because of the doughnuts. Moving along in the story “ The eggs of the world” there is a man telling them that they have shells around them that that they haven't broken but he isnt in one himself. He says “ You are in an egg... You have seen nothing but the inside of an egg and I feel sorry for you. I  pity you”...Mr. Hasegawa sat with a twinkle in his eyes. “What about yourself, Sessue Matoi?” he said. “Do you live in an egg?” “ No Sessue Matoi said. “ An egg is When You Are Walled in, a prisoner within yourself. I am free, I have broken the egg long ago. You see as I am. I am not hidden beneath a shell and I am not enclosed in one either. I am walking on this Earth with my good feet, and also I am drinking and enjoying, but I am sad on seeing so many eggs in the world, Unbroken, untasted, and rotten”(586-587). This part really interested me the most because I felt as if this is true. A lot of people do have a guard up and which is hard for them to take down and I think this is what the author was trying to portray. Even though Matoi said he did not have an eggshell I think he does but because he drinks so much he feels as if he's free even though he's trapped in an endless cycle.
